April 2007 — An unmanned hydrogen fuel cell powered “jet-like” UAV made history this week as it took to the skies over the hills of Bern, Switzerland. The “Hyfish” astonished its creators as it flawlessly performed vertical climbs, loops and other aerial acrobatics at speeds reaching 200 km/h. The successful maiden flight was the result of one and a half years of cooperative development between the German Air & Space Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft-und Raumfahrt) and a number of international partners including Smartfish for the plane design, Druckon, Baltico, and Teknizentrum Ainet. A record performance 1kW fuel cell and hydrogen system weighing just 3kg and capable of powering the small jet was supplied by Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies of Singapore: www.horizonfuelcell.com

1 Megawatt Fuel Cell Power Plant

This is a video of a 1 megawatt Fuel Cell Power Plant at California State University, Northridge, in Los Angeles, CA. The power plant has a reformer that separates hydrogen from natural gas and then feeds the hydrogen into a fuel cell, generating electricity. The plant also recovers the heat generated and uses it for domestic heating on campus. In the future, some of the carbon emitted will be sequestered in a sub-tropical rainforest that is under construction.
While at present this power plant still uses fossil fuels (the natural gas is needed in order to extract the hydrogen from it), in the future the hydrogen will be generated either from landfill gas, or else it will be electrolyzed using wind, solar, geothermal, wave or hydroelectric energy. What is most important and exciting about this plant is the fact that it is using fuel cells–touted to be the future of electricity generation–today, and they are working seamlessly on a large scale.

“The guarantee of an alternative source of energy. The technology of hydrogen-fueled automobiles is being further developed nowadays, especially with the ongoing rise in fuel costs. Hydrogen is very harnessed by the utilization of water in the place of gas. This can sound impossible to believe, particularly since we’ve all grown used to using petrol to power autos. So , the query most motorists ask whenever they hear the news about hydrogen-powered cars : “”is it feasible to run a vehicle on water?”" the answer’s both a yes and a no. While there’s a hope for cars to be fueled completely on water, that technology is still not absolutely harnessed. there’s a technology wherein water is electrolyzed in forming what is often known as Brown’s Gas or HHO. This gas is added to engines and is mixed with fuel. With this gas, the vehicle’s engine burns more effectively, allowing it to have smaller emissions.
The engine will use some of the petrol, and then another portion of HHO gas. Often , the automobile engine uses seventy percent gas and the other 30 percent by HHO gas. This provides a large amount of savings for automobile owners since the engine does not need to use plenty of fuel in running the automobile

Water as Fuel Supplement
During the middle two hours, Ari Cohen & Fred Gutierrez of water4gas spoke about the technology for converting water into hydrogen, which can be used as a supplement for gasoline or diesel in order to boost performance and increase gas mileage. The conversion device installed in a car or truck, allows the engine to burn water as well as gasoline. This \”hydrogen on demand\” system was actually invented 100 years ago, but has been more recently popularized by Ozzie Freedom, who authored two e-books on the subject, said Cohen.
According to Cohen & Gutierrez, the device, which includes a couple vacuum hoses and wires, is fairly simple to install. It uses a little electricity from the car battery to separate water into a gas called HHO (2 parts Hydrogen + 1 Oxygen) which helps the engine run a little cooler and burn fuel more efficiently. Cohen compared the system to a person taking a diet pill, which tells your brain you\’re not hungry.
The ionization process of the electrolysis pulls and separates the oxygen from the hydrogen, explained Gutierrez, who has installed some five hundred systems in vehicles. Finally, there\’s a useable technology that allows people to do something to counteract the high price of gas, as well as get a tax break for using a hybrid system, they noted.
