Shai Agassi, founder and CEO of Better Place, discusses his plan to economically price the electric car. “We’ve taken the price of the battery off the car,” says Agassi, bringing the consumer cost down to around $20,000. South Africa’s ‘Joule’ Electric Car, launched October 2008

Electric cars are surely the way forward and South Africa is taking up the challenge with it’s ‘Joule’ electric vehicle. The car is being built by Optimal Energy, with support from the South African government. The project is headed by leading scientists and engineers, some of whom built S.A.L.T. - SA’s innovative Large Telescope, and before that the incredible Rooivalk attack helicopter. The car has been designed by Keith Helfet, another South African who designed the Jaguar XJ220. Available by end of 2012.

Eric Mattessich improving hybrid car efficiency

Eric Mattessich, a senior at NJIT, has been featured in The New York Times and Popular Science magazine.
That’s because his research is big news: Eric has designed a device to reduce emissions from hybrid car engines. His device, once manufactured, could reduce greenhouse gas emissions from hybrids by 20 percent. It would also increase the efficiency of hybrid engines by 20 percent.
