Automakers Unveil Hi-Tech Concept Cars at the 2010 North American International Auto Show
Concept cars are the future. Designed to give auto enthusiasts and everyday drivers a glimpse of what's to come, these prototypes are made to showcase cutting-edge technology, daring designs and unique layouts.
At the 2010 NAIAS in Detroit, several automakers unveiled buzz-worthy vehicles. Half Jeep, half Cooper, the MINI showed off its wacky Beachcomber concept, designed without doors or a conventional roof. The Blue-Will marked the unveiling of Hyundai's first hybrid and GMC introduced the Granite. Called an Urban Utility Vehicle, the Granite was designed with French style doors, next generation organic LED technology inside and out, flip and fold seats and multiple storage areas.
Mercedes, Ford, Toyota and Volkswagen also showed off their design and engineering chops at the show.

Am I the only one who thinks that this car scrapping scheme is a bad idea in several ways?
1. The discount is not a true discount because it is off the list price but you would get a discount from most manufacturers anyway
2. The scheme encourages people to buy a new car earlier than they would have done otherwise + to buy a car instead of something else.
So it simply favours car manufacturers over producers of other consumer goods, and favours car manufacturers now at the expense of future sale
3. The scheme accelerates the disposal of cars that are in working order. True the older cars being scrapped may use more fuel and be less efficient but apparently producing a new car uses a lot of energy, more than will be saved for many years.
Governments in all countries request years of research before starting much smaller public projects and then suddenly they spend hundreds of millions on what is basically subsidising one industry for a temporary economic boost, and dubious, probably non-existent, and certainly unsubstantiated environmental benefits. Conversely, if this scheme is any good, many other industries are at least as deserving as the car sector.
Thoughts anyone?
1. In most cases manufacturers are offering extra incentives on top of the scrappage scheme discount.
2.The introduction of a scrappage scheme is about boosting demand for new vehicles in order to kick-start the market. 75% of vehicles made in the UK are exported, generating significant revenue. 67% of vehicles sold in the UK are from manufacturers that also produce engines and vehicles here too.
3. Evidence from both the UK and other countries operating scrappage schemes shows that those taking part in the scheme, who currently own a vehicle over ten years old, are likely to choose a new vehicle at the smaller end of the market.
The environmental benefits are:
Air quality - Estimated cost savings of almost £8 million from improved air quality standards of vehicles per annum, and so £23 million over three years (new vehicles Euro 4 or higher, whilst old vehicles to be scrapped would be pre Euro 2)
CO2 emissions – Around 100,000 tonnes of CO2 will be saved each year.
All major vehicle manufacturers invest and create employment in the UK and as a global business, demand stimulated by one economy will have benefits elsewhere. For example, the German scrappage scheme has resulted in increased demand for vehicles produced in the UK as well as an increase for the number of engines which are produced here and exported.
